Students had a choice of 15 or so special interest topics to choose from. Classes in ceramics, photography, collector cars to modern dance as well as more traditional clubs like W club (pictured above), FBLA, DECA, FFA, French and Spanish.
Marching Warriors traveled to Holland, Michigan and played for an audience estimated at over 100,000. The chorus hosted a Madrigal Dinner at the Hofbrau House with 16th century costumes. One-Act won state with a play that 'pinged'. "Oscar" was the most praised Waunakee one-act since first earning a state finals trip in 1976 winning the Critic's Choice Award.
Pictured ~National Honor Society. Science courses offered at WHS offered more than textbook and lab work. Ecology classes visited Waunakee Marsh and students were propelled down the hallway like human hockey pucks. Math was part of the Chicago School of Mathematics Project which stressed math that applied to the real world. Social Studies and English had a shared project in debating (an early version of conference meetings) that was piloted at WHS. Spanish and French classes expanded. Consumer Education served a five-course meal for dinner theatre and technical education had students working off-campus at jobs in mechanics, contruction, and painting.Our senior year, the School Board approved a $5.8 million expansion and remodeling referendum involoving 21 instructional spaces, an addition to the gym, larger band and chorus rooms and an additiona to the spectator area for the swimming pool. Since 1994, additional changes have been made. Our former 'school' is now more of a campus!
Athletics~Simply the Best
The girls volleyball team went to state all four years, winning two championship trophies and two second place trophies. Girls basketball, need I remind anyone???, won the state trophy our senior year with an estimated 1600 Waunakee fans attending. Girls swim team had their bright spots in individual records. Girls soccer had first conference title in school history. Girls softball had a rough season, but persevered. The football team, under new head coach, Pat Rice, struggled our senior year, but layed the ground work for many successful seasons in the years since. Boys soccer had a split season, 13-13-1. Boys baseball won conference championship and boys golf went to sectionals. Boys basketball had a rough season and fell in the semi-final regionals. Boys swim had individual improvements while wrestling placed two in the state finals.
Cross Country and Track and Field also had individual successes. The track team sent athletes to state with many coming home with awards.
